Neumann Family Services provides residential, educational, healthcare, and employment services for adults with a dual diagnosis of intellectual/developmental disabilities and mental illness (IDD-MI). Many of Neumann’s members have significant physical disabilities as well. Their ability to live as independently as possible is limited when their physical environment presents challenges that are physically difficult to overcome. This was the case in two of the agency’s Community Integrated Living Arrangement (CILA) residencies: bathrooms were not adequately equipped to serve the needs of residents with physical disabilities. The Service Club’s support allowed Neumann to re-construct two bathrooms at two of the agency’s Community Integrated Living Arrangements (CILAs). As a result, the bathrooms in these CILAs are now physically structured and equipped to allow members with significant physical challenges to tend to their hygiene needs safely and easily. The ability for persons with disabilities to address their most basic needs in safety and as independently as possible is fundamental to self-determination. Because of the support of The Service Club of Chicago, the residents of these two CILAs now have this ability.
